The Lord has made known his salvation.-- Psalm 98:2

Mass readings: 1 Peter 1:10-16 / Mark 10:28-31

No Regrets

In 1978, my parents sold their gorgeous Victorian home in California, said good-bye to their mothers, siblings and friends, and moved us all to Ohio. People thought they were nuts. We thought they were nuts. But Mom and Dad believed God wanted this move, so they stood strong against the opposition and negative comments.

Here they found a vital faith community and received that ''hundredfold'' Jesus talks about in today's Gospel in return for what they gave up. Wonderful priests, sisters and lay people befriended us, providing attractive examples of how to respond to God's call in the first reading, ''Be holy because I am holy.'' For that reason alone, my parents never regretted their decision, though living here has had its trials. Do we have the courage to leave everything when God calls?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us lay aside all that keeps us from You.
