May 3, Sts. Philip and James

Their message goes out through all the earth.--Psalm 19:5

Mass readings: 1 Corinthians 15:1-8 / John 14:6-14

Walk This Way

From my childhood, faith in Jesus Christ has been an unshakable foundation for my life. But I wonder: Would I have left everything to follow Jesus the way the apostles Philip and James did? It's one thing to be born into a Christian home; it's quite another to defy family, friends, social custom, and religion and throw in your lot with an itinerant rabbi.

Philip responded to a simple ''follow me'' from Christ. How James, son of Alphaeus, ended up among the Twelve, Scripture doesn't tell us. But Philip and James came to believe in ''the way and the truth and the life,'' as Jesus reveals himself in today's Gospel. And they spent the rest of their lives bringing others to Him. Does our faith in Jesus motivate us to do the same?

Prayer: Sts. Philip and James, pray that I may follow Jesus, the Way, Truth and Life.
