“Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire,” said St. Catherine of Siena, whose feast the Church celebrates today, and that is just what she did. Something like Mother Teresa in our own time, Catherine began with works of charity but through her word and example achieved an influence unheard of, especially for a woman, among the leaders of 14th-century Europe. Yet this woman whose words intimidated popes and kings remained always grounded in the love of Christ and the certainty of God’s forgiveness. 

God made us, we learned as children, to know, love and serve Him. My “world” may be considerably smaller than Catherine’s, but if I fulfill the purpose for which I was created I will shine like a flame to those around me. 

Prayer: Lord, help me to be the person You made me to be.
