April 8, Annunciation of the Lord

Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. — Psalm 40: 8,9

Mass Readings: Isaiah 7:10-14;8:10/Hebrews 10:4-10/Luke 1:26-38

Annunciations

Out of the blue, you receive news that will change the rest of your life. The messenger probably isn’t an angel; he or she may be a doctor, or a police officer, or a human resources director. Unlike Mary, you may have no choice in accepting what is about to happen. But like her, you understand that God is present in the event and will stand by you through all its consequences, even though you don’t know what they will be.

You do understand that, right? Because today’s Gospel is less about how Jesus was conceived than it is about blank-check confidence in God’s love. Mary had no way of knowing what would unfold over the next 33 years. No matter, it was enough that God willed it. In her “Yes,” there was no hesitation.

Prayer: Lord, give me Mary’s trust in Your love.
