April 5, Friday in the Octave of Easter

The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone. — Psalm 118:22

Mass Readings: Acts 4:1-12/John 21:1-14

The Rest Is History

If I were making a movie of the life of Peter, today’s Gospel would be the final scene. Not his preaching and imprisonment and martyrdom. All these follow from this moment, just as all our faith follows from the Resurrection.

So much has happened in the previous three years of Peter’s life. The adventure began with a scene much like today’s, when Jesus called him and his companions to be “fishers of men.” In a short time he has witnessed miracles and even seen God — Jesus transfigured in glory. Now, after Good Friday, it all seems like a dream. Then, suddenly, déjà vu: an authoritative voice, a miraculous catch, and the certainty that everything Jesus promised has been true. Stunned, Peter plunges into the water and stumbles toward his Lord. The rest is history.

Prayer: From this moment forward, Lord, I seek only Your will.
