I am the Lord your God: hear my voice. — Psalm 81 (see 11 and 9)
Mass Readings: Hosea 14:2-10/Mark 12:28-34
On a recent trip to the grocery store, I stood in line behind a man who had trouble scraping together enough change for a single loaf of bread. I dug into my pocket, and realized I had the exact amount that he needed: two quarters and a dime. Clenching the coins in my sweaty palm, I wanted to lay them on the counter . . . but didn’t.
When my follow-through is lacking, I’m grateful for the example of St. John of God (d. 1550), who was known for his impulsive acts of charity. On one occasion, he rushed into a burning hospital and carried all the patients out to safety. With this compassionate, action-oriented saint cheering me on, perhaps next time I’ll have the courage to put those coins where they belong.
Prayer: St. John of God, pray for me today, as I minister to those in need.
