Save me, O Lord, in your kindness. — Psalm 31:17b
Mass Readings: Jeremiah 18:18-20/Matthew 20:17-28
A few times a year our parish invites new and longtime parishioners to attend a Sunday evening dinner served by other parishioners. The evening includes wine, appetizers, a delicious meal and a chance to get to know some people we’ve never met and to deepen our relationships with others we already know. It’s a delightful evening.
The only catch is that the people who were the guests are asked to be the hosts — to serve — at the next meal. We happily agreed, along with all the other guests from that meal. After playing both roles, my wife and I agreed that it was far more satisfying to serve than to be served. It’s only fitting that Jesus tells us that as His followers our role is to serve others.
Prayer: Jesus, may I always follow Your example of service.
