Lord, do not deal with us according to our sins. — (see Psalm 103:10a)
Mass Readings: Daniel 9:4b-10/Luke 6:36-38
I was able to spend some time with my mother while she lay dying in her hospital bed. As I said my goodbye, I also told her that I forgave her for all the ways she had hurt me and even more important I asked her to forgive me for all the ways I had hurt her. Although I know she could not hear me because she was brain-dead, I found some peace that I still feel nearly 10 years later.
I know that’s part of what Jesus means in today’s Gospel when he says, “Forgive and you will be forgiven” (Lk 6:37). I also know it’s far easier to forgive a dying person than a living one and that I have plenty to forgive and plenty for which I need to seek forgiveness.
Prayer: Jesus, may I follow the model of forgiveness that You gave to us.
