February 3, Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

I will sing of your salvation. — Psalm 71 (cf. 15ab)

Mass Readings: Jeremiah 1:4-5,17-19/1 Corinthians 12:31–13:13 or 13:4-13/Luke 4:21-30

Living Love

I’m a big Superman fan. As a child, I liked how he could fly, bend steel, rout villains and save humanity. As I age, I’d really like his X-ray vision so I could find all my lost items. I always wanted to be Superman — not, I fear for humanitarian reasons — but because of his super powers.

Even if I could say I wanted to be Superman so I could help others, it probably would have had more to do with fame and adulation than with love for others. But as St. Paul says in today’s second reading, the greatest spiritual gift is love. Without it, absolute knowledge, complete generosity, total faith — even super powers — are nothing. With love, my every act may not be super, but without it, nothing I do will be adequate.

Prayer: God, You Who are love, infuse me with Your love in all I do.
