January 28, St. Thomas Aquinas

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous deeds. — Psalm 98:1a

Mass Readings: Hebrews 9:15, 24-28/Mark 3:22-30

Dangerous Divisions

Today’s Gospel of a “house divided” can feel a bit like a brain teaser. What exactly is Jesus saying in this parable that seems to circle around itself and tests our wits. But, as is often the case, this story is not meant to be a logical path from Point A to Point B. We are meant to go by instinct, to feel our way toward what Jesus is teaching us.

Our world is divided. Our Church sometimes feels divided. Our families are often divided. If we let ourselves be led astray by negative or evil ideas or forces, our homes and our very lives will be divided, and we will fall. Jesus tells us to keep Him as our center point, and then, no matter what divisions occur around us, we will remain intact.

Prayer: Jesus, only You can keep me free from forces that destroy and divide.
