January 20, Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations. — Psalm 96:3

Mass Readings: Isaiah 62:1-5/1Corinthians 12:4-11/John 2:1-11

Motherly Love

If I had to pick a favorite Scripture passage featuring the Blessed Mother, it would be today’s Gospel of the wedding feast at Cana. We get to see Mary being a typical mother. She comes to Jesus to report they have run out of wine, and He rebukes her: “Woman, how does this concern affect me?” Unfazed, she turns to the servers and says, “Do whatever he tells you.”

I smile every time I hear that because it says so much. Mary and Jesus had a true mother-son relationship, one where there was love and, it seems, playfulness. Although Scripture does not give us glimpses into Jesus’ “hidden years,” in that one comment, Mary does. She knew what Jesus could do, would do. We can look to Mary as our model of faith and trust.

Prayer: Blessed Mother Mary, guide us closer to your Son each day.
