Lord, every nation on earth will adore you. — Psalm 72 (see 11)
Mass Readings: 1 John 4:11-18/Mark 6:45-52
I am a champion worrier, always ready to lose a night’s sleep over my latest fear — from the ridiculous to the sublime. I guess that’s why today’s Gospel resonates with me. I understand all too well the reaction of the disciples.
When they see Jesus walking on water, they are “terrified.” Although they had just witnessed the multiplication of the loaves, they still don’t “get” Jesus. The Gospel tells us, “They were completely astounded. They had not understood the incident of the loaves. On the contrary, their hearts were hardened.” How often do we harden our hearts in the face of a miracle? How often do we cling to fear? “Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid,” Jesus says. Are we too terrified to let go and expect a miracle?
Prayer: Jesus, help me to shed my fear and worry and put on faith and trust.
