Grace under Pressure 

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, first American-born saint, founder of the Sisters of Charity, convert, wife, mother, and role model of faith in the face of suffering. It’s quite a resume, and yet what stands out is this saint’s absolute trust in God’s plan. Through financial ruin, widowhood, isolation, others’ outrage over her conversion, and more, she never doubted she was on a path set by God. 

We see that same kind of trust taking root in today’s Gospel, as the earliest disciples meet Jesus, whom John the Baptist calls the “Lamb of God.” They get up, they follow, and they remain. “We have found the Messiah,” Andrew tells Peter. The saints throughout history lead by example, showing us what it means to believe when believing isn’t easy. 

Prayer: Lord, give me the courage and strength to have faith in Your plan.
