For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord. — Psalm 89:2a
Mass Readings: 2 Samuel 7:1-5,8b-12,14a,16/Luke 1:67-79
David has a great plan in today’s first reading. He’s going to build a house for God. But God soon turns his plan upside down. David won’t be doing any building. Instead, God will build a house for him: “Your house and your Kingdom shall endure forever.” In the Gospel, Zechariah announces the fulfillment of God’s promise in the coming of the Savior “born of the house of God’s servant David” who will “guide our feet into the way of peace.”
It was only when David’s plans came to naught that he found his place in God’s plan. Like David, we spend a lot of time weaving our own plans and finding disappointment when they fail. Perhaps we would do better, again like David, to simply find our place in God’s plan.
Prayer: Lord, teach me Your ways.
