OSV takes a dozen awards at annual Catholic media event

OSV Newsweekly brought home a dozen awards this year from the Catholic Press Association’s annual convention, including seven First Places and multiple awards in the same categories.

The awards were announced June 22 in Indianapolis — and, I have to say, were especially gratifying in this centennial year of our newspaper.

Please join our proud staff in celebrating:

◗ Best Front Page — Tabloid, First Place. The judges said: “Compelling. Great use of typography, photographs and color. The front page serves as a great window to what’s inside.”

◗ Best Newswriting — National Event, First Place, for Eddie O’Neill’s article, “Catholic women struggling with infertility form online community.”

◗ Best Newswriting — National Event, Third Place, for Scott Alessi’s article, “Study shows rise of Catholic megaparishes.”

◗ Best Newswriting — International Event, First Place, for Brian Fraga’s article, “The pope ‘removes’ some bishops, leaves others.”

◗ Best Editorial — National or International — National Newspaper, Second Place, for our commentary on Osama bin Laden’s death.

◗ Best Feature Writing — National Newspaper, First Place, for our In Focus, “Beyond the numbers: Faces of homelessness,” to which five OSV freelancers from around the country contributed.

◗ Best Feature Writing — National Newspaper, Second Place, for Emily Stimpson’s article, “Losing a spouse.”

◗ Best Reporting on a Special Age Group — Senior Citizens, First Place, for “Staying connected,” by Maryann Gogniat Eidemiller.

◗ Best Use of Art or Graphics, First Place, for the homelessness In Focus’ layout and graphics created by our design manager, Tyler Ottinger, and our designer, Lindsey Riesen.

◗ Best Coverage of the New Roman Missal, First Place, for, “We’ll be saying what?” by Emily Stimpson.

◗ Best Coverage of the 10-Year Anniversary of 9/11, Honorable Mention.

◗ General Excellence — National Newspaper, Third Place

The judges said: “Powerful use of photos to augment the impressively written feature and news feature stories run through each issue. In-depth coverage seems particularly strong.”

In addition, some OSV books took awards, including:

◗ First Place in the Pastoral Ministry category, for “The Church and the New Media,” by Brandon Vogt.

◗ Honorary Mention, First Time Author category, for “Linking Your Beads,” by Patricia Ann Kasten.

◗ Honorary Mention, Biography category, for “Holy Women,” by Pope Benedict XVI.

As editor, I’d like to thank you for your support and loyalty (which includes contacting me when you think we can do better!), because without you we would not be where we are. Write feedback@osv.com.
