A century ago, 35,000 copies of a new periodical rolled off the presses in Huntington, Ind.
Its title was Our Sunday Visitor, and its publisher was a young idealistic priest named Father John F. Noll. Father Noll’s vision for the newspaper from that very first issue, dated May 5, 1912, was to “serve the Church” by providing a strong, steady, authentic voice to help readers view life from a Catholic perspective.
That vision continues today, not only in OSV Newsweekly, but in Our Sunday Visitor’s many periodicals, books, pamphlets, textbooks and other products, as well as in its Offertory Solutions and Curriculum divisions.
Throughout the year, OSV is planning many events to celebrate its centenary, including a special commemorative issue in September. But to mark the 100th anniversary of the very first issue, we would like to share a bit about OSV’s history, as well as the story of our amazing founder.
OSV's Timeline
1912 - The first 35,000 copies of Our Sunday Visitor roll off the press with an issue date of May 5. Father John F. Noll begins writing a series of articles on the Faith titled “Father Smith Instructs Jackson,” which were later compiled into a book — one of the thousands of titles published by OSV over the years. The tradition continues today, with e-books as well as print editions.
1915 - Father Noll forms a corporation under Indiana charitable laws. Thereafter, all profits were distributed by Our Sunday Visitor to support Catholic causes. In 1976, this system of giving became Our Sunday Visitor Institute. In the past five years, the institute has granted $18.3 million.
1916 - Father Noll begins offering weekly contribution envelopes to parishes. Today, those offering envelopes have expanded into OSV’s Offertory Solutions division, which provides stewardship advice and assistance in online giving, as well as the traditional print envelopes.
1924 - Father Noll begins to publish a magazine for priests title The Acolyte. It is still published today under the name The Priest.
1957 - OSV begins publishing My Daily Visitor, a bimonthly devotional that to this day provides daily meditations, prayers, reflections.
1987 - OSV’s popular bimonthly apologetics magazine, The Catholic Answer, debuts.
2002 - Grace In Action, a stewardship resource distributed as a bulletin insert in parishes, is founded.
2006 - Take Out: Family Faith on the Go, a mini-magazine written just for today’s busy Catholic families, is launched.
2009 - OSV acquires Harcourt Religion Publishers. The renamed OSV Curriculum Division provide textbooks for Catholic schools and catechetical resources for all ages.
