Mass Readings: Isaiah 7:10-14; 8:10/Hebrews 10:4-10/Luke 1:26-38
Countless fans across the country are delighted that baseball season started last Saturday. I don’t follow it much but I do always get a bang watching a third-base coach flashing signs to a player up at the plate. A simple code but, apparently, one complicated enough so that the message is secure.
In today’s first reading God tells the Ahaz — the King of Judah — He’ll give him a sign despite Ahaz saying he wouldn’t ask for one. Sometimes I ask God for a sign and keep my eyes peeled for it but, much more often, He gives me countless signs that I ignore. I’m like a batter too self-absorbed to even glance down the third-base line.
Prayer: Thank You, Heavenly Father, for sending Your Son as one of us.
