September’s Sunday Gospels

By Sister Janet Schaeffler, O.P.

Sept. 2 — Luke 14:1,7-14: JESUS TALKS ABOUT HUMILITY. Jesus calls us to offer hospitality to those who cannot give us anything. How do we welcome the poor, the disabled, the needy into our family circle? When have you let someone else have the spotlight? Is this what real humility means? Sit somewhere in church you’ve never sat before and get to know someone, especially someone who appears to be alone.

Sept. 9 — Luke 14:25-33: GOD IS FIRST. How do the things we own help us to serve others? Do they ever stand in our way of thinking of others first or of putting God first? Jesus says being His follower we can’t do things halfway.  How can we jump in to God’s life with both feet this week? What are our family’s words of wisdom that we live by? Do they come from TV? The culture? The Gospel?

Sept. 16 — Luke 15:1-10(or 1-32): HAPPINESS WHEN THE LOST IS FOUND. Have you ever felt lost and found … by friends? By your family? By God? Have you ever found and welcomed back someone (forgiven them)? Is there someone we need to go and find to welcome home?

Sept. 23 — Luke 16:1-13(or 10-13): BELONGING TO GOD IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN MONEY. In our home, do we talk more about money (things, things to do, to have) or about God? What does that tell us about ourselves? Whom or what do you trust? When did someone trust you in something small? In something big? How or when does God trust you?

Sept. 30 — Luke 16:19-31: THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS. Who do we see each day who is suffering? What can we do to help? Is there a way we could simplify our lifestyle? Our God is a God of connections — we’re the ones who create gaps. Is there someone we can be connected to this week?
