What the CHURCH Teaches: Human Stem Cell Research and Cloning

Stem Cell Research and CloningFact: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; and before you were born I consecrated you (Jer 1:5).

Fact: 61% of all Catholics think stem cell research on embryos left over from in vitro fertilization, which are not used and are normally destroyed, should be permitted (CNN/USA Today/Gallup).

Fact: Only 24% of Catholics and 21% of the general population opposed embryonic stem cell research (Harris Interactive).

The Church teaches that human life from the moment of conception must be protected. Therefore, stem cell research that involves the destruction of human embryos is forbidden. To help educate Catholics on the complicated subject of stem cell research, what is permitted and what is immoral, Our Sunday Visitor has gathered information from the Holy Father, the U.S. Bishops, noted moral theologians, and OSV staff.
