Teaching Catholic Kids May 2009

May is Mary's Month!

Just Like MaryHow fitting it is that nationally we celebrate Mother’s Day in May, the month of Our Lady. As mother to us all, Mary is the best example of the selfless love of a mother, which we first witness in the Gospels in her “yes” to God, and as she stood at the foot of the cross. As children look to their mothers for unconditional love, comfort, and understanding, we can all look to Mary to care for us and intercede for us in our prayers to her Son.

I was alarmed when some time ago a young Catholic school teacher asked me if Catholics still pray the Rosary! I gently assured her that this devotion is still very much a part of our Catholic practices. During this month of May, when we honor Mary and turn to her in a special way for guidance and protection, let us especially remember the power of the Rosary, a prayer that has been described as “a treasure of graces." Teach your children about this important devotion, and encourage them to pray the Rosary often.

May God bless all mothers, and may we all look to Mary, the Mother of God for guidance, strength, and love.

A Mother's Day Prayer

Mother's Prayer CardAll-loving God,
we give you thanks and praise
for mothers young and old.

We pray for young mothers,
who give live and count toes and tend to our every need;
May they be blessed with patience and tenderness
to care for their families and themselves with great joy.

We pray for our own mothers
who have nurtured and cared for us;
May they continue to guide
in strong and gentle ways.

We remember mothers who are separated
from their children because of war, poverty, or conflict;
May they feel the loving embrace of
our God who wipes every tear away.

We pray for women who are not mothers
but still love and shape us
with mothers care and compassion.

We remember mothers, grandmothers,
and great-grandmothers who are no longer with us
but who live forever in our memory
and nourish us with their love. Amen.
