On the Way to Jerusalem: Joyful Journey or Forced March?

By Sister Janet Schaeffler, O.P.

Take Out: Family Faith on the GoHow do we enter into Lent — and, in reality, each day of our lives — as followers of Jesus? With enthusiasm and joy? Or with gloom and a sense of “here we go again, can’t wait until it’s over”? Even though there may not be an abundance of paintings of the smiling Jesus, if we really read the Gospels, it becomes obvious that Jesus’ life and message is filled with hope, life, optimism, passion, excitement and joy. That is also Jesus’ call to us — each and every day, and during the season of Lent.

Lent is a joyful journey when:

  • We understand the reason for Lent is to savor baptism: Recall Jesus’ baptism, when God said, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” (Lk 4:22). What could be more joyful, more wonderful! That mystery, that affirmation, that baptism sent Jesus out to live a life for others. Our baptism does the same. Lent gives us a time to come back to ourselves, to joyfully renew our baptismal commitment, to reclaim our identity of living the Gospel with enthusiasm.  A joyful journey which brings and gives joy.
  • We see the whole picture: Lent is not just a 40-day period to get through. Lent is one part of a larger season — Lent/Easter/Pentecost. Lent makes sense only when balanced with Easter and Pentecost. Lent exists for the new life, the joyful life of Easter. Yet, it does not stop there. Easter is for Pentecost. This great 50-day feast is for mission, for carrying on the mission of Christ in the world, bringing Christ’s peace, reconciliation, life, joy and compassion to each and everyone we meet in our corner of the world. A joyful journey which brings and gives joy.
