We’re hearing many nationalistic slogans. We’re also hearing many insults thrown at our country. Reality, we all know, lies somewhere in between. The U.S. is a marvelous country with many problems. In times past we relied mostly on ourselves; we were not very aware of daily life in other cultures. Now, however, our technology allows us into the lives of virtually any people any where. We are a global village. Therefore, our Christian obligations surpass just the U.S. Where as decades ago we could somewhat legitimately reason that we need only “care for our own,” now we are very well aware that caring for our own impacts others beyond our borders. The world is quickly becoming a village without boundaries. This gives us much food for thought. Our children are growing up in a society that is more aware of this global village and our responsibilities to it. Take some time this month to consider ways you can increase awareness of global diversity this fall.

Prayer -- Giving Dear Lord, some people make a big deal about what they give to the poor or about how much they pray. Sometimes it’s good to know these things because it reminds others to pray and to give. But, most of the time, Lord, You want us to keep our giving and our praying just between You and us. That way we can be sure that we are giving and praying just for love of You, and not for the praise or attention it might bring us.
