The man in this story had a “quiet friend” who helped him see his situation in a new light. Who are the “quiet friends” in your life – the people who just sort of accidentally, over time, have become much more than just acquaintances?
The man’s attitude changed when he realized what a gift he’d had in his father. The truth is, we are seldom good stewards of the things we take for granted. Take a moment to count your blessings – and then share that list with the group. Chances are that list will grow as others bring to mind blessings you hadn’t thought of!
Some young fathers are fortunate to have had fathers of their own who were good role models. Others try “to be the dad they wish they’d had.” What do you value most about your father? What gifts or life lessons did you receive from him? How does your attitude about your own father affect your relationship with God as Father?
It wasn’t the man’s “best friend” who helped him in this story, just a man he’d gotten to know over time. Do you have long-time friends like that – just people you’ve known a long, long time that you now feel close to or comfortable with?
We can only be good stewards of the blessings we’re aware of. Think hard – what good things in your life have “become invisible” or do you take for granted?
What is the single best thing about your dad (or stepdad)? Have you told him so? He would probably welcome your affirmation as much or more than a gift this Father’s Day!
The man in the story had a friend who helped him. Who are your friends? How have they helped you?
We take the best care of things that are the most important to us. But sometimes those “things” are people. Who are the most important people in your life? Why are they important to you?
What’s the best thing about your dad or your granddad? Don’t forget to say an extra prayer for them on Father’s Day!
