Stewardship Tip March 2009

Is your parish a good steward of its treasure?  Let’s check…

Do you receive parishioners’ gifts gratefully?  Do you say thank you?  How?  How often?

Do you cultivate those gifts responsibly?  Do you have internal controls in place?  Are the funds invested wisely – in diocesan accounts or in small business interest-free checking accounts (now insured without limit) in these uncertain economic times?  Are they allocated fairly among ministries according to the parish mission and priorities?

Do you share them in justice and love?  Are you helping to create a climate of generosity by giving away a set percentage of each week’s/month’s income to other worthy causes – “tithing the tithe”?  Do you have a standing outreach/social justice committee to determine which causes and needs to support?

Do you return them with increase to the Lord?  Do you report regularly to the parish how much is collected, how it is spent, and with whom it is shared?  A parish that asks parishioners to give generously a planned, proportional, “string-less” gift must model and demonstrate that same selfless giving with regard to it treasure.

How does your parish measure up?
