Sometimes we think that to be good stewards of the gift of time we must always be busy, working hard or volunteering or otherwise actively engaged in some worthwhile activity. But the creation stories remind us that even God rested on the seventh day!
Taking time out to rest, rejuvenate, and re-charge is not only a good idea – it’s necessary to our mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Will you get a chance to take a vacation, enjoy a “stay-cation,” or go on a retreat this summer? Perhaps you will choose to spend your non-work time working in a different way – gardening, sprucing up your house or yard, or “detailing” the family car. Maybe you will choose to take a leisurely walk in the evening or watch a local Little League game or chat with neighbors in the front yard… It’s all good stewardship of the gifts of life and time!
During Lent, we usually make a special effort to pray more intentionally. Beginning with the celebration of the out-pouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost (May 31st this year), the summer days of June, July and August can be just as spiritually invigorating. Good stewards take no vacation from God, but resolve instead to make these precious days a Sabbath time of deep, reflective connection to the Lord. Take just a moment now to decide how you will relax and enjoy – and demonstrate good stewardship of time – this summer.
