Discussion Questions May 2009

Adults

  • When was the last time you took time to savor something beautiful – a walk in a garden, a concert, a trip to a museum or library?  How are enjoyment and stewardship related?
  • May is traditionally associated with motherhood; we celebrate Mother’s Day and honor Mary in special ways.  In what ways is God “like a mother” to you?  Read Isaiah 49:15-16 to jump-start your thinking.
  • The rest of the quote about Mary from the stewardship pastoral says “…she was called and gifted by God; she responded generously, creatively, and prudently; she understood her divinely assigned role as ‘handmaid’ in terms of service and fidelity.”  Use those same broad categories to evaluate your stewardship.  How are you doing?

Teens

  • What do you consider truly beautiful?  When did you last take time to really enjoy it?  If it wasn’t recently, what keeps you from “taking time to smell the roses”?
  • Sometimes we measure the value of something by its price – designer jeans and expensive, brand-name running shoes, for example.  What do you have that is both valuable and expensive?  Do you have anything you consider “priceless”?  What is it?  Why is it so valuable to you?
  • Who are the most important mother figures in your life so far?

Children

  • What did you see or hear today that was beautiful?  Did you take time to enjoy it?
  • Easter is the church’s most important feast day – and we take 50 days to celebrate it, from Easter Sunday (April 12 this year) to Pentecost (May 31).  Counting today, how many days of Easter are there left to celebrate this year?
  • Sunday, May 10 is Mother’s Day.  Plan now to do something nice for your mother, your grandmother, your aunt, and/or your godmother on that day.  Think of something thoughtful that they have done for you and say thank you, too.  Good stewards are grateful!
