We all know people like the first woman in this month’s parable – capable, but shallow and dissatisfied. In what dimensions of your life are you like her? In what ways are you more like the second woman?
The second woman had fed her intellect – cultivated her talent – but then what? What’s the next chapter in this stewardship parable? What do you do to cultivate and share your talents and skills?
This parable could have been written about any gift of God. Think of another gift or talent and retell this story. What does that talent or strength look like when it is taken for granted or used frivolously? What does it look like/lead to when it is well stewarded?
Feeding her mind with “intellectual junk food” left the first woman in the parable feeling dissatisfied and discontented. What real blessings did she have? What would you suggest to help her become more aware of what she had and less covetous of others?
What gift or talent do you have that you haven’t developed? What one step could you take today to be more grateful – and a better steward – of that gift?
Meister Eckhart once said, “If the only prayer you say in your life is thank you, that would suffice.” For what should you be more grateful? What difference might it make in your life if you were?
School’s out – or will be soon. But don’t let your brain “go on vacation” all summer! What will you do this summer to exercise your mind? Work on a summer science project? Join a summer reading program at the library? What other activities could be “brain food” for you?
And don’t forget your body! What will you do to get more exercise and to help keep your body strong and healthy?
Make a list of all the things you wish you could do really well. Then pick one to work this summer. Ask mom or dad or a responsible adult to help you think of ways you could practice to get better and better at it. Who could you share that new skill with when you get good at it?
