July 2006 Discussion Questions

Adults

This month’s parable suggests that freedom isn’t always freeing.  How did the woman’s insistence on “freedom” end up limiting her?  Can you think of similar examples in your own life?

Freedom isn’t free.”  The 4th of July provides an opportunity to reflect on the costs of civil and religious freedom – both individually and as a nation.  What has freedom cost us?  How can we be good stewards of the legacy of freedom?

The truth will set you free,” Scripture says.  What does that mean to you personally?  From what have you been set free?

Teens

Freedom from and freedom to are two very different things.  What are you most grateful to be free from?  What does your life situation make you free to do or to be?

We often see on a bumper sticker, “If you love something, set it free.”  What does that mean?  How are freedom and love related to each other?

If you don’t RSVP to a party -– to stay free to accept a better offer or to be able to “go with the flow” –- your action limits the ability of the party giver to plan for the right number of guests.  Can you think of other examples when the freedom of one person actually limits or restricts the freedom of another?

Children

It’s summer!  No school!  You’re free!  What will you do with your free time this summer?

The4th of July, Independence Day, is a celebration of our nation’s freedom.  How does your family celebrate it?  What does it mean to you to say that we live in a free country?

Don’t take a vacation from helping others!  What one helpful thing could you do this summer to make someone else’s life happier or easier?
