Lay Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel (historically known as the Third Order) is an association of mainly laypersons. Its members, responding to a special call of God, freely and deliberately commit themselves “to live in the following of Jesus Christ” according to the charism, traditions and spirit of Carmel under the authority of the Prior General of the Carmelite Order.
We have been known since the 13th century as Third Order Dominicans or Dominican tertiaries, but are now usually referred to simply as Lay Dominicans. Men and women, singles and couples; Catholic lay faithful (as well as some secular priests and permanent deacons) organized in fraternities to constitute a "secular" branch of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans).
The Christian Life Community (CLC) way of life invites us to encounter God in all the various aspects of our everyday life, reflect on these experiences, become more aware of God’s activity in these experiences, and respond in ever more authentic ways to God’s desire within our individual lives and our communal lives, based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.

"The Lord give you peace!" is a salutation given by St. Francis of Assisi, and I use it here to welcome you to the web site of the National Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order (SFO) in the United States of America. The Secular Franciscan Order, formerly known as the Third Order of St. Francis, is an official Order within the Catholic Church, and was established by St. Francis of Assisi early in the thirteenth century. Members do not live in community, but live their everyday lives in the world. However, members gather together in fraternity on a regular basis. By profession, they promise to follow a Rule of Life approved and confirmed by Pope Paul VI in June of 1978.
Marists are people who are called to do the work of Mary in her name and with her spirit. We are members of the Society of Mary, a family of many branches--priests, brothers, sisters and lay people. Mary was a lay woman who brought Jesus Christ to the world, lived a hidden life in Nazareth and was present at the birth of the Church. We believe Mary wants to be present to the Church now--through us. Marists believe Mary graciously chooses individuals to join her family and to do her work and to live by her spirit. If you have questions, please email Father Edwin Keel SM, edwink@bellsouth.net.
