Sanctuary

According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, the sanctuary (presbyterium) is where the priest and servers have places to perform their proper function, whether it is leading in prayer, announcing the Word of God, or ministering at the altar (nn. 294-295). The sanctuary should be set off from the rest of the church by a raised floor, special shape, or decoration (n. 295).
