Huguenots
French Calvinists of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries who opposed a central monarchy and supported local autonomy. The persecution of the Huguenots was brought about both by religious and political motives, and many of them fled from France to settle in North America, South Africa, the Netherlands, and England.
