Indulgences (ihn-DUHL-dzhehn-sehz)
The remission - either partial or full - of temporal punishment for sins and the resulting satisfaction owed to God. Both the Sacrament of Penance and a perfect act of contrition bestow indulgences. They may be gained for oneself or for those in purgatory.
(NASH puh-PAI-ruhs)
The only known pre-Christian biblical manuscript in Hebrew until the discoveries at Qumran brought to light even older Hebrew and Aramaic texts. A fragment of papyrus purchased in 1902 from an Egyptian dealer by the English archaeologist W. L. Nash, now in the library of Cambridge University, dating from 150 B.C., it is significant for its ancient witness to the text of the Ten Commandments, substantially in the form of Dt 5:6-21, and to the Shema of Dt 6:4-5.
