Humility Triumphs

Contemporary life is often marked by a sense of self-promotion. Highly visible examples of super athletes, Hollywood personalities, and political leaders spend significant time and effort to promote their person, talents, or ideas. On a more basic level, all of us must promote ourselves in our personal resume in order to get the job we seek!

Maximizing our potential to the betterment of the common good is certainly a positive goal, but at times the rationale for our self-promotion is more self-centered than communal. This is the problem the apostles found in their discussion of who was the greatest. Jesus suggests that the humility of a young child is the remedy to such an attitude. Maybe we can learn this same lesson and apply it to our daily lives.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, teach me always to be humble of heart.
