My faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him. — Psalm 89:25
Mass Readings: 2 Samuel 5:1-7,10; / Mark 3:22-30
In His Image
David was Jesse’s youngest son, born in the obscure little town of Bethlehem. When Samuel was sent to anoint the future king of Israel, even David’s own father didn’t consider him a likely candidate (1 Sam 16:10-11). Yet, God chose this simple shepherd-boy to be king, and today’s reading from 2 Samuel describes the long-awaited crowning of David as king over all Israel. We read, “David grew steadily more powerful, for the Lord of hosts was with him.”
Not only is God with every baby born and yet to be born, each one — whether they turn out to be kings or shepherds — is created in God’s image and likeness. That’s why abortion not only violates the dignity of the human person, but is a sin against their Creator.
Prayer: Creator-God, create in us a deeper respect for Your gift of life.
