Be Loved . . . and Love
Before His public ministry, Jesus was baptized by John who had already given Him the titles “Lamb of God” and “Son of God.” In today’s Gospel, the Father himself bestows upon Jesus a title that signifies both affirmation (“my beloved Son”) and approval (“I am well pleased”). It’s in the assurance of the Father’s love and approval that the Son embarks on a mission of costly love that culminates in the cross.
In our baptism, we become beloved children of our Heavenly Father. And it’s this identity that makes it possible for us to fulfill our baptismal calling to share God’s love and live lives pleasing Him. It’s to those secure and strengthened as beloved children of God that “his commandment are not burdensome” (1 Jn 5:3).
Prayer: Father, help me to live and love in the light of my identity as Your beloved child.
