January 2, Sts. Basil and Gregory Nazianzen

All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God. — Psalm 98:3

Mass Readings: 1 John 2:22-28 / John 1:19-28

Humble Yet Confident

Crowds flocked to listen to the wild man from the wilderness! But popularity didn’t turn John’s head. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve sought to be like God; in today’s Gospel, John promptly squashes rumors that he was the Messiah, or even Elijah or Moses. John is humble, yet without being self-deprecating — he may have been a lone voice in the wilderness, but he proclaimed his message with great passion and power because he knew it came from God himself.

You and I are certainly not God; and few of us are prophets or preachers, but each of us is a potential mouthpiece of God. Isn’t that an awesome thought? How clearly, how authentically, does the voice of God resound through my life — my words, my actions, my lifestyle?

Prayer: Almighty God, let my life proclaim Your love and holiness with power and passion.
