November 6, Thirty-Second Sunday

My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. — Psalm 63:2

Mass Readings: Wisdom 6:12-16 / 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 or 4:13-14 / Matthew 25:1-13

Wise Is as Wise Does

In “Forrest Gump” the main character points out that “Mama says that stupid is as stupid does.” One (loose) interpretation of today’s readings could be “God the Father says wise is as wise does.”

If we want this gift of wisdon from the Holy Spirit then we need to ask for it, recognize its being offered to us, and then use it, use it, use it! But do we want it? What good is it, really? What can it do for you? The first reading says the person who finds wisdom “shall quickly be free from care.” Certainly, that doesn’t mean indifferent, but it also doesn’t mean a life without hardship and heartache. Wisdom helps us to see the “big picture,” to become better aware of God’s loving presence and trust in Him in good times and in bad.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, grant that I may be truly wise.
