Rejoice in the Lord, you just! — Psalm 97:12
Mass readings: Joel 4:12-21 / Luke 11:27-28
Action, Not Ancestry
The mayor is speaking to a large audience, refuting ridiculous and false accusations about budget matters. Suddenly someone from the audience calls out, “Hooray for your tennis coach and your personal trainer!” If we read the verses before and after today’s very short Gospel (Lk 11:27-28), we find that the woman calling out from the crowd interrupted Jesus’ refutation of false accusations. Superficially it may seem as though the woman wanted to honor Mary, but Jesus brushed it aside. That wasn’t His intention at all.
To the Jews, family bloodline and ancestry were all-important. For some, that factor outranked learning the will of God and acting in accordance with it. Jesus was not minimizing His mother whatsoever. He was making a statement about putting first things first.
Prayer: Mary, help me to hear and keep the word of God.
