Blessed be the Lord, for he has heard my prayer. — Psalm 28:6

Mass readings: 1 Timothy 2:1-8 / Luke 7:1-10

Bread of Life

Today’s Gospel tells the story behind words we pray when we’re about to receive Communion. A centurion asks Jesus to heal his dying slave from afar because, he says, “I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof.”

When I receive Communion, I often am aware of others who are receiving it. I experience the beauty and diversity of the Body of Christ through these people. I also puzzle over how ho-hum some of them look as they receive the Lord. It reminds me of something a convert to Catholicism once said: If people were truly aware that this is God they’re receiving — the One through whom the universe was created — they would wear crash helmets before receiving Him. Such power! But also such love. And such a gift to us.

Prayer: Jesus, Bread of life, thank You for the gift of Your Body and Your Blood.
