All Are Called 

God draws people from all walks of life to serve Him. Unlike the modest occupation of St. Isidore the Farmer (May 15), St. Bede the Venerable, was a veritable Renaissance man. Today we honor this English scholar-saint who was conversant in mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, poetics, ecclesiastical history, and holy scripture. An eighth-century Benedictine monk, St. Bede found time to compose 45 books, including his famous Ecclesiastical History of England — a model of historical writing. 

In contrast to the cerebral St. Bede, today we also commemorate the life of St. Mary Magdalene da Pazzi, a sixteenth-century Florentine mystic. As an “ecstatic,” she experienced God with both her internal and external senses. It is said she could read minds and predict the future. We can only marvel at God’s uses of His unique creations. 

Prayer: Holy saints, pray that we employ the talents given us by our Creator.
