Little Bits
When I was in elementary school my class learned about the parable of the loaves and fishes. Like most kids, I pictured thousands of people picnicking on fish-sandwich hors d’oeuvres. Unless the portions were miniscule, how else could Jesus feed so many with so little? I still struggle to comprehend the logistics of today’s Gospel. Like the pragmatic apostle Philip, who was an eyewitness to the event, I’m astounded.
My parish’s theme this year is “Doing God’s Work in the World” — an apt analogy of this miracle. Jesus gave us an example of love poured out and a need fulfilled with simple foods. What work can we do in the world with the little we have? What can we do for those closest to us?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, bless my “little bit of bread and few fishes” and help me share it with those who need it today.
