Have No Doubt 

Even though you’re reading this in May, I’m writing it in December and recently attended a performance of A Christmas Carol. With the May 2 readings fresh in my mind, I marveled at the similarity between Dickens’ portrayal of Scrooge and the Gospel’s account of Thomas. Both are champion doubters. Scrooge doubted the needs of the poor, his clerk’s honesty, his nephew’s sincerity, and his own worth. 

Like Thomas, Scrooge was a tactile learner. He had to see and touch and hear the mistakes of his past in order to believe the worth of his future. Only after he accepted that worthiness, could he extrapolate it onto the whole world. Jesus asks us to have more faith than that, and He assures us that theological virtue is available to us.

Prayer: St. Thomas, help us believe what we have not seen.
