A Church of Sinners
Today’s Gospel tells us that before Judas was a betrayer, he was a thief. He was in charge of the donations and “used to steal the contributions.” Since there’s no mention of the other apostles sounding the alarm it seems safe to assume he had them fooled. But, of course, he couldn’t fool Jesus. Still, Jesus didn’t sound an alarm either.
A major difference between Judas (the thief and betrayer) and Peter (who three times denied Christ) is that Peter recognized his guilt and returned to Jesus, confessing his love for Christ. That’s very comforting. I’m sure I wouldn’t be allowed in a church that denied membership to sinners, or accepted only saints.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, I am truly sorry for my sins. Help me be a better Catholic.
