Praise the Lord, Jerusalem. — Psalm 147:12

Mass readings: Deuteronomy 4:1,5-9 / Matthew 5:17-19

Superstars of Heaven

Today’s reading from Deuteronomy instructs us to pass on the decrees and statutes of the Lord to our children and grandchildren, while Matthew declares those who teach “these Commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” These words bring to mind a mother and her six children I’ve seen at daily Mass for many years. First, there was a baby boy, then his brother, followed by four sisters. Imagine how many times they’ve heard Bible passages during those years, how many times they’ve sung age-old hymns, how many sermons have been preached to them, how many occasions they’ve received the Eucharist!

Their mother probably won’t ever become famous or receive accolades, but I think she’ll be given superstar status in heaven for being obedient and providing her children with a godly upbringing.

Prayer: Lord, in times of intense anti-Christian attitudes, give us courage to share and live our convictions.
