Keeping Ordinary Time
Today is the beginning of Ordinary Time, the liturgical season that’s not Advent, Christmas, Lent, or Easter. It’s just “ordinary.” It’s the time after the excitement fades and we settle down to the ordinary business of living the Gospel. This stretch of Ordinary Time lasts until Ash Wednesday. The weekday readings are all drawn from Hebrews and the Gospel of Mark.
There’s nothing ordinary about the Gospel reading. Jesus walks by the Sea of Galilee and invites Peter, Andrew, James, and John to follow Him. They stop what they’re doing and join Him immediately. James and John even leave their father sitting in a boat. The Gospel invites us to reflect on our own response to the Lord. Are we listening to Him? How attentively? When we hear His call, do we answer it?
Prayer: I am Your servant, Lord Jesus. Speak. I am listening.
