January 1, Solemnity of the Mother of God

May God bless us in his mercy. — Psalm 67:2

Mass Readings: Numbers 6:22-27 / Galatians 4:4-7 / Luke 2:16-21

A Worldwide Celebration

The first day of the year is a worldwide holiday celebration. How fitting that today Catholics, Orthodox, and many other Christians honor Mary the Mother of God. This Marian title affirms that her Son Jesus is true God and true man, the Savior of the world. Today’s feast and the feast of Christmas seven days ago proclaim the Good News that God has come to set us free.

The Collect of today’s Mass is this beautiful prayer: “Father, Source of light in every age, the virgin conceived and bore Your Son who is called Wonderful God, Prince of Peace. May her prayer, the gift of a mother’s love, be Your people’s joy through all ages.”

Prayer: Thank you, Mary, for bringing God to us.
