Marana tha! Come, Lord Jesus! — 1 Corinthians 16:22

Mass reading: Revelation 22:1-7 / Luke 21:34-36

A Matter of Urgency

“ Be vigilant at all times,” Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel. Once again, there is a sense of urgency in His admonition to be on guard lest we get caught by surprise when our time comes. Courage, perseverance, vigilance. These have been the rallying cries of the past few weeks and will continue as we again begin the liturgical year tomorrow with Advent.

It would be easy to gloss over some of those cries. “Right, right. Vigilance. Got it.” But do we get it? Obviously it’s something that bears repeating. Jesus was saying it to His own followers then and continues to say it to us today. And still we manage to look away, cover our ears and pretend we have an endless amount of time to get things right. We may not. Be vigilant!

Prayer: Dear Lord, have mercy on me, especially when I’m not vigilant.
