Those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life. — John 8:12
Mass Readings: Galatians 5:18-25 / Luke 11:42-46
In St. Paul’s letter today, we find a long list of sins as well as a list of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Paul’s description of the works of the flesh sounds like a summary of much of contemporary society. We can shake our heads in dismay or be inspired by the other list.
According to Paul, if we want to inherit the kingdom of God, we crucify our passions and desires. This implies sacrifice. My fourth-grade teacher, Sister Eileen, used to say that we offer it up. In retrospect, I can see the old tradition of offering it up is a practical approach to all hardship and sacrifice. It’s one way we can grow in the fruits of the Spirit.
Prayer: Guide us, Holy Spirit, so that peace and love may grow through our sacrifices.
