Let your mercy come to me, O Lord. — Psalm 119:41
Mass Readings: Galatians 5:1-6 / Luke 11:37-41
“Lord, it’s hard to be humble when you’re perfect in every way.” I’ve always loved that old song, because it describes me precisely. Sometimes I think I have all the answers and my way is best. I find it so easy to be critical of others.
The Pharisees in today’s Gospel were proud and they kept the letter of the law. At first Jesus’ reprimand seems harsh, but sometimes the truth hurts. By confronting the Pharisees’ hypocrisy, Jesus is pointing the way for them to change. What about me? Have I confronted my own self-righteousness and pride? Maybe I could give others the benefit of the doubt. Not easy when you think you’re perfect like me.
Prayer: Change me Lord, Help me to be less judgmental.
