Lead me in your justice, Lord. —Psalm 5:9

Mass Readings: 1 Corinthians 5:1-8 / Luke 6:6-11

God’s Work

My father loved sports. He once confessed he considered sports writing but he needed a better income. So he took the unglamorous job of selling life insurance for 30 years, enabling him to help put seven children through Catholic grade and high schools and then college. His job provided more than a paycheck. It gave him dignity and purpose. It set a good example to his children of perseverance and pluck. It fulfilled one of his duties as a loving husband. And his expertise on the job gave his policyholders peace of mind and security.

Vocations are not restricted to priests and nuns. On Labor Day, let’s celebrate the diligence and dedication of all workers. We do God’s work when we do our jobs well.

Prayer: Lord, let my faith and love shine through in my work.
